Classic Movie Gift Guide 2019

It’s that time of year again, so I’ve gathered my favorite gifts from past Gift Guides as well as some new Classic Hollywood themed treats for you or someone special. I hope that something on this list strikes your fancy. Enjoy!

  • A vintage ad or poster:

These lovely posters of An American in Paris, Robin Hood, and Happy Go Lovely start at just $9.95 from the Etsy shop Encore Print Society. The shop has an amazing selection of mid-century ads, like the Seagrams Gin and train ads, too! I highly recommend browsing through.

I also love the The Film Artist‘s unique prints for $10-35.

  • Speaking of An American in Paris, check out these beautiful dishes from TCM!

There are cereal bowls, salad plates, and dinner plates starting at $58 for a set of four. Gorgeous!

  • Some excellent Hollywood books!

A current favorite of mine is Merton of the Movies by Harry Leon Wilson. First published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1919 before it hit bookstores in 1922, this hilarious and moving novel about a Hollywood-obsessed, clueless young man has been adapted to the screen three times, including once as a Red Skelton vehicle! It’s a fun, sharp, engrossing read and a great look at Hollywood of the teens and twenties. LARB Books has a lovely new edition which you can find on their website or at Amazon.

Other favorite Classic Hollywood books include:

Ten Movies at a Time: A 350-Film Journey Through Hollywood and America 1930-1970 by John DiLeo

Scandals of Classic Hollywood: Sex, Deviance, and Drama from the Golden Age of American Cinema by Anne Helen Petersen

Round Up the Usual Suspects: The Making of Casablanca–Bogart, Bergman, and World War II by Aljean Harmetz

Warner Bros: Hollywood’s Ultimate Backlot by Steven Bingen and Marc Wanamaker

The Million Dollar Mermaid: An Autobiography by Esther Williams with Digby Diehl

  • Movie decor to turn your home theater into something extra special!

A clapboard rug, movie-themed throw pillows, and plenty of popcorn bowls and cupcake toppers will make your next movie night even more fun!

  • Movies for that movie night!

For suggestions tailored to Christmas, the 4th of July, HalloweenValentine’s Day, or classics for kids, check out my Great Classic Films series.

  • Vintage-inspired barware for some classy cocktails!

Channel your inner Nick and Nora Charles with a gleaming cocktail set. Crate and Barrel has some fun options, including their Callaway drinkware collection that would look right at home in a Thin Man movie.

  • This very cool vintage-inspired weekender bag from TCM.

I’ve included travel stickers on gift guides before, but this handsome bag ($94.95) comes with them for added classic flair!

  • Tinsel for a truly classic Christmas tree!

If you watch movies from the 1930s-50s set around Christmas time, you’ll notice that the Christmas trees positively drip with tinsel. Why not add some of that Old Hollywood glitter to your festive decorations? You can find some here and here on Amazon.

I hope something in this list makes you smile!
